Aloha P2 'Ohana!

We had such a fun week this week. On Thursday we celebrated our 100th day of school and the opening of the 2014 Sochi Oympics. To celebrate our 100th day in school, we did a whole day on the number 100. During our reading stations, we worked as a team to read 100 books, and we met our goal after just 1 hour! After each student read a book to a teacher they got a sticker to put on our class chart. It was so much fun to work together to reach our goal.

Next, for math we made a Fruit Cheerios necklaces with 100 cheerios. To help us easily count our Cheerios we first put them in groups of 10. Then after we were done counting our 100 Cheerios we got to string them and make a necklace.

Later in the afternoon, we did an art project using the number "100". With our imaginations we had to use the numbers to create a picture. Here's an example of some of our work:

Lastly, on Thursday we learned about the 2014 Sochi Olympics. We learned briefly about the different types of sporting events that make up the Winter Olympics (we even got to watch a highlight video). Next, we had our very own opening ceremony here in P2. Each of our table groups are named after a different country (a country each group decided on a couple weeks ago), so each table group created their country's flag by using our non-fiction social studies books as references. Then, each country got to march in our classroom's opening ceremony.
Can you name each country's flag below? Your kids can!

We also read an awesome book this week called "How Full Is Your Bucket?" By Tom Rath and Mary Reckmeyer. We learned that we can fill each other's "bucket" by saying nice things to them. When our buckets are full we feel happy, but when our buckets are empty we feel sad or angry. On Friday, we each got a chance to fill each other's bucket. Each student got a piece of paper with another classmates name on it and we got to tell them something we appreciated and liked about them. It was so much fun filling our friends' buckets. It brought a huge smile to everyone's face. We enjoyed this activity so much that we are going to start doing this once a week!

As a reminder for next week, we will be celebrating Valentines Day on Thursday, February 13th. We have a total of 20 students in our class (9 boys, 11 girls) , if you would like to bring something. Then on Friday, February 14th we will be going on our field trip. Please make sure your child comes to school with close-toed shoes and clothes that will allow them to participate in PE activities throughout the day. Please also pack your child a snack and lunch and plenty of water, as we will not be coming back to school until the end of the day.

We would also like to congratulate Nelena for being a Kindergarten C.A.R.E. Kid winner this week!

We hope you have a great weekend! See you on Monday.
