First Annual Science Fair

Aloha family and friends!
This week was Kealakehe Elementary School's very first science fair. It was so great to see so many of you there!  It was such a fun time!

If you weren't able to make it to the science fair here are some highlights...

Our poster turned out great! Thank you to Mrs. Hopman for donating the tri-fold board!

2nd grade had some great hands-on activities about minerals!

Third grade had machine sorts, pulley systems, and astonomy displays!

Fourth and fifth graders entered their own science projects that were judged by students from WHEA.

There were also lots of scientists from all over the island who presented!

Did you know that during SBAC on Tueadays and Thursdays we have dancing in the cafeteria during morning recess? It is led by our very own VP Mrs. Blaber.

I went myself this week and it was such a fun time!

We have been practicing our reading comprehension by using retelling bracelets.

The beads help us to remember to tell the beginning, middle, and end of a story we have read.

This week was Secretary Appreciaiton Week! We made thank you cards for Ms. Marveen, Ms. Debra, and Ms. Jeri.

Hope you all had as great a week as we did!

An "Egg-citing" Week!

Aloha friends and families!

This week in P2 we concluded our unit on three-dimensional shapes. We learned the names of the different shapes, about flat and round surfaces, and the number of surfaces on each shape. We also learned about the shapes you can make when you trace a flat surface of a three-dimensional shape. The kids worked in groups of four to discover the shapes you get when tracing a cone, cylinder, rectangular prism, and a cube.

This week was Librarian Appreciation Week! The kids made thank you cards for our librarians Ms. Chock and Ms. Cassidy. Ms. Chock always reads great stories when we visit the library, and Ms. Cassidy is always there to help us check out our books.

All week the kids waited in anticipation for Friday, our science experiment day! Thank you parents for allowing your children to bring their plastic baggy to school filled with an item from home. We had such a diverse selection of materials! Some of the items that were brought were rice, water, socks, flour, and bread!

Before we began our egg drop experiment the kids made predictions on which materials would keep the egg from breaking and which ones wouldn't. Then we took it outside to see for ourselves!

Some of the results were quite surprising! To find out more about the results of our "Egg-speriment" be sure to attend our first annual school science fair! It is THIS Thursday, April 23rd from 3:30-5:30.

We would like to give a big MAHOLA to Mrs. Hopman for donating the eggs and helping us with this totally fun experiment! The kids had a BLAST!

Hope to see you all next Thursday at our science fair!

We Did It!

Aloha Family and Friends!
We did it! In just over a month's time we raised $165 dollars in recyclables! That means ALL the kids in our class get to go to Dolphin Quest for FREE! Permission slips for the trip will be going home next week.

This week we finished up our lessons on crosswalk safety. Each student made a flip book that included an introduction, 4 steps to cross the street, and a closing.

This quarter we are studying space for science. The kids broke in to 6 groups and each group had a book on the Solar System. The kids took turns reading the book to each other in the group.

Finally, we made posters in our class for one of the third grade classes. We are their pep squad for the SBAC testing! The kids had a great time making these encouraging posters!

That is it for this week. Have a great weekend!

PE Math!

Aloha Family and Friends!
This week in P2 we did a little thing I like to call "PE Math"! The kids had so much fun! We combined PE and Math together into one super awesome lesson! First, the kids got in to groups of 4 or 5. Everyone had a bean bag animal. Next, the kids had to throw the bean bag animals towards a target on the ground. The closer to the center of the target, the more points they got.

After each throw the kids then recorded their score on a bar graph. Here is how a couple of kids did...

This week in health we learned all about how to cross the street safely. The safest way to cross the street is to:
1. Be with an adult, or get their permission
2. Find a crosswalk or street corner (cars are more likely to spot you there!)
3. Stand at the edge of the side walk (off the street so you are safe, but close enough to see any oncoming cars.)
4. Look left, right, and left again.
5. Cross the street in a straight line, and keep looking for cars.

We also learned about different traffic signs that help us cross the street.

This week was Spirit Week, and Friday was Cultural Day! To celebrate we learned about the different types of clothing worn in different countries for Social Studies. Afterwards, the kids did a cute art project to show what they learned...

What a multicultural bunch!

Thank you to everyone who has been supporting our Dolphin Quest fundraiser by bringing in recyclables or money from recyclables. We are so close to our goal, and still have more bags to deposit in class! Way to go!

Hope you all have a fantastic three day weekend and I will see you on Monday!
