Robots and Other Inventions

This week was all about inventors, inventions, and how they help us. We learned about lots of great inventions like the telephone, cars, computers, robots, and light bulbs!

After reading about how Thomas Edison invented the light bulb we made connections to how we use electric light.

The kids also got to come up with their own inventions.

A Blueberry Split
First put the honey on the bread.
Next put the blueberries on the honey.
Then put peanut butter on the blueberries.
Last put bread in top.

My pollution-Sucker-upper
First my pollution Sucker-upper sucks up pollution.
Next it turns the pollution into clean air.
Then the dirty stuff goes into a box that turns it into dirt.
Last it breathes out the clear air and goes outside and dumps the dirt out.

After learning about all these inventions we played a game called "Give One Get One". Each student had to write down the name of one invention and how it helps us. Then they all had to go around and share that invention with a classmate. In return, their classmate had to share theirs with them. Then they moved on to share with someone else.

Soon everybody had four great ideas on their paper!

We also read about a robot inventor this week! His name is Tomotaka Takahashi. He is an inventor from Japan who creates robots to act more like humans. Here is just a little bit of what we read about him from our textbook...

Sound familiar!?! Takahashi brought his robots to Kona to complete the Ironman!

It was so exciting to read about something that happened in our home town in our textbook! Here is one of the clips that we watched in class that shows one of his robots here in Kona. There are 24 video clips in all if you want to see more! (Remember, it took a whole week for the robots to complete the Ironman!)

After learning about Takahashi and his robots, the kids wrote about what kind of robot they would like to invent.

If I invented a robot it would be a money printing robot. First my robot can do printing money. Next I can buy anything. Last I can have food to make breakfast and dinner and lunch. That is why I like the money printing robot.

If I invented a robot it would be a food robot. First it will bake me breakfast. Next it will give me a drink. Last it will bake me lunch. Do you like robots?

Just a reminder, Friday is our field trip to Dolphin Quest! All students need to bring a home lunch in a reusable bag (no plastic or paper), water bottle, towel, and slippers. Please put sunscreen on your child before they come to school. We will be getting wet, so boys can wear swim trunks and a t-shirt. Girls can wear a swimsuit under their shorts and shirt.
