Kinder Buddies and Time Capsules

Aloha Family and Friends of P2!
This will be our final posting for the year... I can't believe summer is almost here!

As the year is winding down to a close and second grade is just around the corner the students were asked to reflect on what they are excited about for next year and what they will miss about first grade. Here is what some of them wrote...

"I love 2nd grade because it helps you learn more better about math and science."

For language arts we made dioramas about our favorite book. It had to include the characters, what they were doing, and the setting. They turned out great!

On Thursday one of the Kindergarten classes came to visit us for the afternoon. To prepare for their visit the kids made foldables that tell about the important things to know about first grade. Everyone read theirs to a kindergarten buddy and gave it as a gift.

If your child was in Sr. K in P2 did you know that we made time capsules last year? Friday they finally were opened!

Inside was a self-portrait...

Their favorite book in Kindergarten...

Their first story...

And their handprints!

My, how they have grown!

As a reminder, Tuesday will be our end of the year class party. Also, Songfest is Wednesday, June 3rd. The kids have worked so hard and it is going to be an awesome show!

Have a great summer!

Letters To Our Second Grade Teachers

The end of the school year is just around the corner, which means second grade is almost here! This week all the kids wrote a letter to their future second grade teacher. It was a chance for them to tell next year's teacher what they like, don't like, and what they are good at. These letters will follow your child to their next year's teacher for them to read!

This week we read a silly story titled "Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type". It is about cows that go on strike because the nights are too cold and they demand electric blankets. Here are some of the kids' favorite parts...

On Friday we learned about the phases of the moon. All the kids make flip books to show each of the phases.

This Tuesday we are having class photos in the morning. Also, please have your child turn in their yellow shirt and $0.50 for Songfest if they haven't already.

Enjoy the 3 day weekend!

Building Bridges

We had so much fun this week integrating creativity in to our learning! This quarter in science we have been learning about the different things that we can see in the sky. On Monday we learned about storms! After learning about lightning we each got to draw a picture of a lightning storm. We began outlining and coloring in our scenes with crayon...

Then began to paint the black sky over our pictures with watercolor.

They turned out great!

This week in language arts our focus was on how things get built. We learned about how ships, bridges, are other things are built. On Wednesday the kids divided in to 6 teams. Each team had to create a "blue print" for a bridge that they would build together. They had to give their bridge a name and label the materials that they would need to complete it.

On Thursday the teams got to work! Some of the many items they had to choose from were blocks, popsicle sticks, yarn, and glue.

The kids worked great in their teams and really collaborated. We had some awesome bridges in the end!

We did "how-to" writing this week, also known as procedural writing. The kids had to write a paper that teaches someone how to do something...

In the end, the kids got to present their writing. They all projected their writing on to the board and read their work out loud. We have some great teachers in this class!

Just a reminder, we have our all school Songfest Wednesday, June 3rd. Please be sure that your child has turned in their yellow t-shirt as well a 50 cents to help cover the cost of our performance accessories.
