Aloha Onizuka Space Center

Monday was our field trip to the Onizuka Space Center! It was so much fun!
Mrs. Tashima taught us all about Ellison Onizuka, the first Hawaiian astronaut.

We watched a video all about how astronauts live in space.

We got to look at cool artifacts....

and play with cool space games.

This is a piece of a moon rock!

On Tuesday we wrote to Mrs. Tashima to say thank you and tell what we learned when we were there.

In math we are learning all about shapes. This week we studied circles and squares.

In Social Studies we learned all about Egypt. We learned about their flag, how they celebrate Easter, and of course learned about the pyramids.

Thank you to everyone who has turned in their Spirit Card money. Final turn in day for funds and unsold cards is Friday, March 4th. If you would like additional cards to sell, please let me know.

Have a great weekend!

Hearts and Art!

Aloha family and friends of D2!
This week we got to do some extra special things in class!
On Tuesday we did a fun science experiment. We wanted to see what would happen when we place candy hearts into different kinds of liquid. We made predictions first and then placed the candy hearts in the jars. First we did it with water, then soda, and finally vinegar.

The heart sank in the water. In the soda it sank to the bottom, then fizzled a whole bunch, and finally rose to the top! In the vinegar it sank to the bottom and then fizzled a little bit.

After each one we drew what we observed.

On Friday the class got to so some watercoloring! First they outlined their picture with a black crayon. Then they painted in their pictures. They all did a great job using their tools respectfully, and created some excellent pieces of art!

Don't forget! Our field trip is this Monday! All students need a home lunch, a drink, and need to wear closed toe shoes.

Have a great weekend!

Chinese New Year

Aloha Family and Friends!
On Monday we learned about Chinese New Year! We learned about how Kindergarteners learn to count to 10 in China.

We also reinacted the lion dance!

This week we began our dramatic play post office! Everyone wrote a letter to a friend that included something they like as well as a question.

Then they were placed in our class mailbox. Our weekly "mail carrier" placed the mail into our individual mailboxes.

This week we continued our study on Africa by learning about Kenya. We learned about their flag, how they celebrate Christmas, and watched a video about the typical school day for a Kenyan child.

We will be having our class Valentines Day celebration on Tuesday, Feb 16th. Kids are welcome (but don't have to) bring valentines for the class. We have 21 students with 12 girls and 9 boys.

Also, our field trip to the Onikuza Space Center will be Monday, February 22nd. Kids will need to wear tennis shoes as well as bring a home lunch.

Have a great weekend!

In To Africa!

Aloha Family and Friends,
This week has been a really special week! Ms. Josie taught her first solo week for the semester. That means that she was the lead teacher for the whole week, and she did fabulous!
For Social Studies she created a unit plan all about Africa.

The kids started by telling all the things that they already know about Africa.

On Tuesday she taught the kids all about the country of South Africa.

At the end of the lesson everyone had to draw and write at least one thing that they learned about South Africa.

(Mouse)

(Drum)

On Friday they showed all that they learned from Ms. Josie about South Africa.

This week in math Ms. Josie did a wonderful job teaching the kids about the number 20.

We received a special package in the mail this week! Our class received a donation through DonorsChoose to purchase play food for the class. This way we can extend our learning on healthy food and have interactive play together. The kids loved it! They had so much playing imaginative games with each other, and got excited when they recognized fruits and vegetables that we ate previously last month, like peas!

Our class is currently trying to get another project funded on DonorChoose. Click on the link below to learn more about it and feel free to pass it on to any family and friends you think may be interested...

If your child would like to bring Valentines to school they can be brought to school Tuesday, February 16th.

Our field trip will be Monday, February 22nd.

Have a great weekend!
