50 Acts of Kindness and 100 Days of School!

Happy Kindness Week!

This week our school participated in Kindness Week and The Great Kindness Challenge! As a part of our focus on kindess, classrooms were encouraged to decorate their doors. We decorated ours with individual puzzle pieces to show that each one of us is unique yet we all belong together! Everyone colored a piece to the puzzle and included their name and the different things that they love and enjoy (even Ms. Josie and myself!)

The Great Kindess Challenge consisted of 50 different acts of kindness that our class had to complete in one week. Some of the items were create a "Kindess Matters" poster, give a flower to the office staff,  thank the bus driver, give an apple to your teacher (thank you for those!!!) and thank your principal in a creative way. We managed to complete ALL 50 items on the list! The kids did a great job showing kindness all week.

One other item from the list was to cut out 10 hearts and give them to friends.

Another item was to help a younger student. A few kids from our class went to one of the preschool classrooms on Friday and helped the preschoolers with making patterns.

Friday we celebrated our 100th day of school!

The kids had such a blast! We grouped fruit loops by tens to make an editable necklace...

We created art using the number 100...

And we made silly hats that also showed 100 by groups of 10.

Thank you to everyone who has already turned in permission slips for our upcoming field trip to the Onizuka Space Center. We had a generous donation from Aloha Productions who is paying the way for our entire grade level to go on this field trip! What a great and unexpected act of kindess we received during Kindness Week! Field trip day for our class will be Monday, February 22nd.

I also want to say mahalo to you, parents and families, for all you do and making this such a wonderful past 100 days of school!

Fun With Fruit

Aloha Family and Friends of D2!
This week we continued our learning on eating healthy. During our afternoon snack time we tried three different kinds of fruit. On Tuesday we ate mandarins. On Wednesday we ate apples. And on Thursday we ate bananas. Here is what some of the kids thought of the apples!

"I like apples because it is juicy."

"I like apples because is juicy."

All of our writing about bananas will be posted outside our classroom door next week. Next time you are at school check out what every one thinks about bananas!

In math we have been learning all about our teen numbers. This week we learned about 16, 17, and 18. Here is what some of the kids know and learned about the number 18...

In social studies this week we learned all about the European country of Scotland. We learned that in Scotland they have fireworks on New Years Eve. We also learned that they eat things like haggis and shepherd's pie. We also learned that the first golf course is in Scotland.

This next week our school in participating in The Great Kindness Challenge! As a class we will be trying to complete 50 acts of kindness in one week!

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Yummy Veggies!

Aloha Family and Friends of D2!
This week we learned all about different vegetables and why it is important to eat them. On Monday we learned about carrots. We learned that carrots are healthy for your eyes and your skin. Everyone tried at at least one bite of carrot, and some had several! Afterwards, the kids wrote whether or not they like how the carrots tasted.

On Tuesday we all tried snap peas. Overall, this was the kids least favorite vegetable that we tried this week.

On Wednesday we learned about and sampled celery. We learned that celery helps make our bones strong!

Mrs. Q stopped by on Friday and showed us some of the vegetables from her garden at her family's farm. They grow all kinds of yummy vegetables!

In Social Studies this month we are learning about some of the countries in Europe. So far we have studied France and Italy.
We learned that in France kids put out their shoes on Christmas Eve for Pere Noel to leave gifts in. We also practiced saying "bon jour" to each other in the mornings, which is hello is French.

In Italy families play a game at Christmas called "urn of fate." A bowl is passed around with presents and everyone takes one. Some have gifts inside and some are empty!

On Friday, after finishing our final lesson on Italy, we had a pizza party for earing the most tickets during the 2nd quarter Million Miles Campaign!

If you would like to order books from the Scholastic, orders and money are due next Friday.
Report cards will be going home this Thursday!

Have a great weekend!

It's 2016!

Aloha family and friends of D2!
Hope you all had a fun and restful winter break!
On Thursday the kids were given the opportunity to share about their break through their writing. Here are some of the highlights of break from kids in our class...

"I went to the airport."

"I watched Star Wars The Force Awakens in the movie theater."

"Aunty and Uncle and me ate s'mores at home."

On Friday we talked about resolutions and some of the things we want to do in this new year.
Here are what some of the kids hope the new year holds for them!

"swim with dolphins at the hotel."

We also made resolutions for the new year and thought about something new we want to try or something that we want to get better at. We took all the resolutions and made a banner for outside of our classroom.

On Friday they announced the winners for the Million Miles Campaign...and we won! The kids have won a pizza party next Friday for being the kindergarten class that walked the most laps last quarter on Tuesday and Thursday mornings!

Scholastic book orders went home on Thursday. If you would like to order books for your child fill out the order and return to school along with cash or a check made out to "Scholastic". You can also order books online using our personalized class code that is found on the front of the catalog. Orders are due Friday, Jan 22nd.

Hope you all have a fabulous weekend!
