Brazil!

Aloha Family and Friends!
This week Ms. Josie taught the kids all about Brazil! She put together a great presentation to teach the kids all about the different parts of Brazil and its culture.

After the lesson the kids showed what they learned by coloring in Brazil on a map, and drawing an animal from Brazil, food from Brazil, and something that makes Brazil special. You may have noticed them hanging outside of our classroom door!

This past week we learned all about different rules in different places. One of the sets of rules that we looked at is how to cross the street. First the kids shared everything that they already know about how to safely cross the street. They sure did know a lot! Then we practiced "crossing the street" inside and outside of the classroom.  Finally, the kids had to draw themselves safely crossing the street.

We have just begun learning how to add in math. On Friday the kids used candy to model how to put together in order to add. And they even got to eat a piece. It was a sweet math lesson! 😉

Parent Teacher Conferences will be continuing for one more week. I have enjoyed getting to have a one to one talk with each of you! I have been enjoying this class so much, and it is so encouraging to have so many supportive and involved parents. Early release will continue all this week and we will resume the regular schedule Monday, November 9th.

Fire Safety

Aloha Family and Friends!
This week has been packed with so many exciting events! Tuesday we had our field trip to the Aloha Theater to see "Anime Alice in Wonderland". It was so cool! The kids had a really fun time. And afterwards we ate lunch and played at Higashihara Park.
On Wednesday we learned about fire safety. We had an assembly with real firefighters! We learned about having a special meeting spot as a family if there is ever a fire. We also learned about dialing 911 when there is an emergency and the importance of knowing your address to tell the dispatcher.

We also learned that firefighters have to get dressed in one minute when there is a fire! Two of our first grade teachers raced to see if they could put on a whole firefighter's outfit in one minute. They did really well!

After the assembly we learned all about the equipment that firefighters carry on the fire trucks.

At the end of the day on Wednesday we made cards for one of our local firefighters, Yurik Resetnikov. As you may know he is in Oahu with severe spinal injuries. The cards went to him this weekend!

We are still collecting change as a school to help support the Resetnikov ohana. Your child can bring in coins from now til middle of November.

This week we started to learn about South America. We read a book about Peru and colored it in on our map.

We also have been learning about bugs. We learned about the different parts of an insect.

The kids then labeled their own insect!

Last quarter our class won the Million Miles contest! Our class collected 800 tickets. On Friday we had a pizza party to celebrate!

Mahalo to everyone who donated baked goods for our cupcake walk that Kindergarten did at the Country Fair. It was a great success. Everyone loved all the goodies!

Parent Teacher Conferences are this week and next week so school will be getting out everyday at 1:03 for the next 2 weeks.

This next week is also Spirit Week! Kids can dress up if they like for the following days:
Monday: Pajama Day
Tuesday: Crazy Hair Day
Wednesday: Rainbow Day
Thursday: Cultural Day
Friday: Hat Day (Kindergarten will not be participating in wearing costumes that day. Please save them for Halloween 😊)

All About Bugs!

Aloha Families and Friends!
This week we had another visit from our school counselor Mrs. Q! She did a great lesson with the kids on the importance of being a good listener. At the end of the lesson she had a listening activity for the kids to try. She read directions on how and what to color on the picture below. For example, they first had to color the girl's hat purple.

When they were finished this is what it looked like!

This week we started learning about bugs. As part of our math we made a bug counting book.

We are also starting a book about bugs in our writing. The first thing we did was brainstorm different bugs that we know about. We also used Google to find pictures of those bugs.

Then the kids worked on their first page for their all about bugs book. They each choose 4 of the bugs to include in their book.

The kids had a blast and were so engaged! And they were so excited about being able to spell the names of the bugs!

Tuesday October 20th is our field trip day! Please send your child to school with a home lunch, water, and tennis shoes.

Next week we will be learning about the letter Oo. Kids are welcome to bring in items from home that begin with the letter o to school.

Have a great weekend!

Exploring with our Senses!

This past month we have been learning about our senses. Ms. Josie prepared a wonderful science lesson where the kids got to explore and investigate using their different senses. She created 5 centers and the kids were able to go from one table to the next, exploring with their senses. At each table the kids had to describe what they saw, heard, smelt, felt, and tasted.

After every one had explored at each of the stations, Ms. Josie charted the different words they used to describe using their senses.

This week we started something called The 100 Club. Each day during calendar 2 kids are chosen to see if they can count all the way to 100 with no mistakes. If they make it they are in the 100 club! So far we have 8 kids in the 100 club. Our goal is to have everyone in the club before the end o the year!

When we return from Fall Break our sight word for the week will be "like". To help us get a head start we all wrote about one thing that we like!

"I like playing plants vs. zombies."

"I like ice cream"

On Friday we practiced being Community Contributors by helping pick up rubbish on the playground. Everyone had so much fun and worked so hard to clean up our recess field!

October begins the Book It program! Your child can earn a personal pan pizza just by reading every night. Be sure to sign each night on the reading log and your child can claim their prize at the end of  the month.

When we return for break we will be learning about he letter Tt. Students are welcome to bring in items from home that with the letter T.

Have a fabulous Fall Break!
