Bugs!

Aloha family and friends,
This week we started a new chapter in math: data!
The kids learned a new game to help understand this concept. Everyone first made their own spinner...

Then they played with a parter. Both players get 5 turns. Then there is one final spin. Whoever has the most of that color wins!

This game has become a part of our regular math station rotations and the kids love it!

Our theme for language arts this week was Insects! We read an informational text about insects that hide in their surroundings. After reading about it we got to write about it! During writing we focused on two things: 1) including an "introduction" 2) underlining the title of a book.

To wrap up what we learned about insects this week the kids did an inquiry project on the parts of a bug.

First we made foldables to record our ideas.

Then the kids used their information to make a poster.

And the kids had to label the parts of their insect.

Next week is SPIRIT WEEK! Monday is "Twin Day". Kids can dress like a twin with a friend. Our class is also dressing as twins with our neighbor class, P1. We are wearing a black shirt and a baseball cap. Girls can wear pigtails.

The rest of Spirit Week is as follows:
Tues - Person you admire Day
Wed - Wacky Wednesday (dress silly!)
Thurs - Cultural Day

As a reminder - We are still collecting recyclables to raise funds for our Dolphin Quest field trip!

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Just Like Mike

Aloha family and friends of our P2 clan!

Last week all the kids read a book called "Penguins All Around". We also finished our chapter book of "Mr. Popper's Penguins". So I decided to see if they could take what we learned in those two books to support their opinion on whether or not we should get a penguin for a class pet. They came up with some really great points!

This week we have been reading all about how animals survive in nature. As our final project the kids made dioramas to show an animal in its habitat.

The kids worked in pairs and collaborated really well together!

And created some great final projects!

On Friday everyone was given a new "name" for the day. We all wore name tags that were a doubles or a doubles minus one fact. We had to call each other by our sums all day! I was Mrs. 22 (11+11), and here we have ten, eleven, twenty, and fifteen.
We also did a really cool art project on Friday! The kids learned about Michelangelo and how he painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The kids got to create their own piece of art work just as Michelangelo would have created his! (Don't worry... we all cleaned the floor before we started!)

The kids had a lot of fun creating their masterpieces while upside down!

What magnificent creations!

We are continuing to raise money for our Dolphin Quest field trip. We have currently raised over $60!!! For this to be a completely free field trip we need to raise a total of $165. You can continue to donate HI5 products until the beginning of April. Mahalo for all of your support!

I hope that you all have a fun, safe, and restful spring break!

Teaching with Tebow

Aloha P2 Ohana!
What a jam-packed week this has been!

Monday was Dr. Seuss day! We started the day reading "The Cat in the Hat". All the kids got to make their own hat like the cat in the hat. They each wrote our sight words for the week on the hat too!

Another famous Dr. Seuss book we enjoyed that day was "Green Eggs and Ham", and we had the famous quarterback Tim Tebow read it to us! (Well, sort of...)

Tuesday was Girls' Day. The girls got be first in line and eat lunch in the classroom. In the afternoon the kids colored and painted baby dolls.

Wednesday was our 120th day of school.  We did lots of things that involved the number 120 that day.

One activity the kids did was draw what they think they will look like at 120 years old.

Another activity they did was make a book of 120 words.

This week we have been learning all about how animals help each other. On Thursday the kids made reports about an animal. The kids were in groups of three and researched an animal on PebbleGo.

Then they made a flip book with four facts about that animal...

And in the inside drew a picture.

On Friday each group presented their reports. The kids had a lot of fun sharing their learning with the rest of the class!

THANK YOU to everyone who has been supporting our "recycling fundraiser" for our Dolphin Quest field trip. We have already collected over 30 dollars in recyclables! Thank you so much for supporting our cause!

Hope you all have a fabulous weekend!
