High Five!

Aloha All!
We have been up to some exciting and new things this week in P2. For starters we began something called "High-Five Words". Each day two of the sight words for the week are posted on or by our doors. When the students enter or exit the classroom they say the word and give it a high-five. The kids have had a blast with it!

This week we learned about how animals use the different parts of their bodies. To recap what we learned the kids each made a flip book that tells about the body parts of an animal of their choosing. And it also allowed up to practice using commons when listing more than two things!

"A tiger has tail, ears, nose."
"A bat has a straight ear, and big wings, and little feet."

For writing this week we practice writing folktales. The kids were encouraged to use sound words in their folktales. After they made their rough draft, we learned how to use different editing marks. The kids edited their papers before writing their final drafts. Below you can see the editing marks that kids made followed by their final drafts!

We would like to give a big MAHALO to everyone who has already donated plastic bottles and cans to our class so that we can raise money for our Dolphin Quest field trip! We REALLY appreciate it. We will continue to collect recyclables from now until April.

Hope you all had as great of a week as we had!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kawai

Happy Chinese New Year!

We learned a lot about Chinese New Year this week. For example we learned that Chinese New Year lasts for 15 days. The celebration begins with families sweeping out the house so that the year has a clean start. In order to take part in this tradition we cleaned out classroom. The kids did a great job making everything near and tidy!

Another great Chinese New Year tradition is their parades, which feature a giant dragon that is worn by many, many people. We made our own dragons in class too!

There is always a big feast to celebrate the Chinese New Year. We each got to write about what kind of Chinese food is our favorite.

"My favorite Chinese food is orange chicken. It is yummy and it is delicious. That is why orange chicken is my favorite food!

"My favorite Chinese food is crab rangoon. I like it because in side it have's sour cream. I like it because it is very crunchy. I like it because you can pour the pink sauce and it make's it better. That is why my crab rangoon."

Monday was no school due to Presidents' Day. This week we learned about Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We learned that George loved math, and Abe loved to read! Here is what the kids wrote about what they thought it would be like to be president.

*getting a lot of phone call

Last Friday was our field day and the kids got to write about their favorite part of the trip. Here were some favorites!

"Dear class my favorite part was the thing that Mrs. Kawai do. I like it because it was fun."

That is all for this week. Have a great weekend!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Aloha friends and families of P2!
We had quite an exciting week!

In language arts we read a lot about how different foods get from a farm to our table. For example, we learned that after a farmer milks the cows the milk is put in a giant tank and taken to a dairy. Then the milk is boiled to kill the germs. Finally  it is cooled, bottled, and then sent to the stores to be sold.

Everyone in class made a poster to show the sequence of how different foods get from the farm to our tables...

This week we celebrated Valentine's Day!  We had an awesome party full of yummy valentines! The kids also had a fun valentines writing assignment. Everyone wrote about what they think is the best way to show someone you love them.

In writing we are learning how opinion pieces have an opening that states the opinion, three reasons to support the opinion, and then a closing. To make sure that they have each component kids underline their opening with green, their reasons with yellow, and their closing with red.

We also were able to do a fun Valentine's Day craft. The kids used hearts to make a butterfly and flowers.

On Friday we had our field day. It was quite hot but we had a lot of fun! The kids got to ride scooters, play with a giant parachute, do hula hoop, go through an obstacles course, and so much more! We would like to give a BIG MAHALO to David, Jim, and Jan who we our chaperones! They were awesome!

Hope you all have a fabulous three day weekend. Next week we will be learning about Chinese New Year!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Past, Present, Future

Aloha family and friends!

What a fun and exciting week we have had here in P2! It was Support Staff Appreciation Week here at school, and we had so much fun celebrating our classroom tutor, Ms. Sayme. She is such a great help to us and our neighbor class, P1. To thank her for all of her hard work we each made her a special thank you card.

On Wednesday we had a special assembly with the famous Frank DeLima! He came and talked to us about what it takes to be successful in life. We learned the importance of borrowing books from the library and reading for at least 10 minutes every day. We also learned that it is important to eat lots of fruits and vegetables and drink lots of water to stay healthy. And of course we sang about peanut butter and jelly!

In math we have been learning all about place value and adding two-digit numbers! To help us learn this concept we would build each of the numbers we were adding together...

And then to find the sum sorted them on the bottom.

In Language Arts this week our vocabulary consisted of past, present, future, and century. The students got to read about the pioneers and how 100 years ago schools were one room and had only one teacher. For our "Thinker Thursday" the kids had to write about whether they would want to live in the past, in the present, or in the future.

"Would you rather live in the past or in the present or in the future? I would rather live in the past. I would go on the horses and in the wagon. I would go in tiny class. I had good food. There is a lot of people. That is why I would live in the past."

"Would you rather live in the future? I would live in the future. They might have robot dogs. They might have flying cars. They might have aliens on the moon. Do you like the future?"

As a reminder, we will be celebrating Valentines Day in class on Thursday, February 12th. Our field trip is Friday, February 13th. For Friday all students need to wear tennis shoes and bring a sack lunch.  We will be out in the sun all day so please back a couple of drinks with your child and place sunscreen on them before school. We will be departing from school first thing that morning so please have your child there before 8am!

Mahalo!
