Fables, Friends, and a Slippery Fish!

Aloha family and friends!
What a fun and full week this has been! We began our week by hearing the famous fable "The Tortoise and the Hare." Many of us have heard the story before and knew that in the end the tortoise would win the race. Others of us were surprised that the tortoise won, even though the hare was much faster. We all learned an important lesson that it is not how fast you are, but instead it is important to do our best!

After the story we wrote about what we like to do with our friends. The hare likes to race and others in the class said that they like to race as well. Others said they like to play with games or dolls. Others like to play sports. Here are some of our examples:

"I play race with my friend."

"I play basketball with my big brother Kirk."

"I play soccer with my friend named Trisden."

This week we also began our first chapter book read aloud for the year. The title is "Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle" and we read a little bit of it each day after lunch. It is a very entertaining book about a lady who makes friends with the children in her town and shows them how much fun anything can be if you use your imagination... Even washing dishes!

In preparation for Labor Day we talked about different types of jobs that people have. We brainstormed a list of worker names that includes firefighter, construction worker, car salesman, and vet. We also talked about the tools and equipment each worker needs to do their job. We then picked our favorite to write about. Here is what we came up with!

"A chef has a chef hat and a spatula."

"A firefighter has a boot and coat and hat."

"A rock star has a guitar and sings..."

Speaking of singing, one of our favorite things to do in P2 is sing songs! We close every day with our "Good Bye" song along with one or two other songs. Our favorite songs to sing are "Slippery Fish" and "The Pizza Song". Click on the links below to hear the songs for yourself!

Hope you all have a safe and fabulous Labor Day weekend!

We're Back!

Aloha family and friends!
Hope you all had a fabulous summer. We are now in our THIRD week of firstgdrade here in P2 and we have already been leaning so much!

Every month we have a school-wide Book of the Month. For the month of August the book is "HaveYou Filled a Bucket Today?" It is a book that teaches us that being nice to others makes us feel better about our selves. And when we are mean and hurtful to others we are also hurting ourselves. It is such a great book!

On Tuesday, after only 9 days of class we filled our marble jar! Whenever the entire class is showing that they are being respectful or making good decisions marbles go in to the jar.  When the jar is filled we get a party!

On Wednesday we got to celebrate this achievement with a Popsicle party!!!

This week began our school-wide Million Miles program. Every Tuesday and Thursday kids can walk laps around the D field from 7am til 7:45am. Each lap earns a blue ticket and 5 tickets equals a mile.  We already have 177 tickets! That's 35.4 miles we have walked/run as a class in only 2 days!

On Friday we read a poem called "Our Bike". It is about a girl and her family who ride a single bike together, even the cat! Four seats on one bike! Can you imagine?!? Afterwards we each drew a picture and wrote what we enjoy doing with our families.

(We are eating ice cream.)

(We are going to the volcano.)

A giant mahalo to everyone who has already donated to our "Pennies for Puna" jar. In just one week we have already collected $29.04!!!! The fundraiser continues til Tuesdsay, September 2nd so it is not too late to bring in any change you have hanging around your house, car or under your couch!

Hope you all have a fabulous weekend!
